Property Brothers’ Jonathan Scott Loves Little Dogs

The smaller the dogs, the bigger the man

At 6-foot-5, a construction dude with—I couldn’t help but notice—fine taste in fabulous footwear (Italian, I think?), Jonathan makes up 50 percent of the hit series Property Brothers’ co-hosting team. Along with twin brother Drew, put simply, the brothers are gaining more attention than a hot real estate market, as their show tops the ratings on both the W Network and HGTV. more

Jonathan’s Simple Tips For a Dog-Friendly Home

Bamboo floors are great for dogs. They’re durable and are harder than most species of hardwood. They’re also environmentally friendly because bamboo is a highly renewable source of material. A bamboo plant can grow up to 78 inches in just 40 days. more

From Chuck to Chuck-Its

Yvonne Strahovski on Chuck, her name change, and asking the right questions

Yvonne Strahovski, star of NBC’s Chuck, the voice of Miranda Lawson in the Mass Effect video game series, and vocal animal rescue crusader. And yes, of course, I concluded my tweet as we twitter-bugs do, with a simple #YvonneStrahovski. (God bless the hashtag, the universal symbol for “Join in on the conversation!”) Less than a minute later, I thought I’d been attacked by some kind of weird virus and that Twitter was going twitter-bananas on me. But no, it was simply Twitter in action: a plethora of Yvonne fans jumping at the chance to talk to her, via me and Modern Dog magazine. more

The Inspiring, Unsinkable Denise Richards

Denise Richards on motherhood, animal rescue, and taking off the eyelashes

Yes, this is a woman who can hold her own. The mother of Sheen’s two daughters, Sami and Lola, and the subject of an endless stream of interest in her personal life, she still manages to keep her head high and her finger on the pulse of that which really matters: a healthy balance between career time, family time, and a heckuva lot of animal rescue awareness. All told, this is a woman who is less eye-candy, and more, well, soul-candy. Sure, we’ve been thinking about her a lot lately. But as far as I’m concerned, she’s earned it. more

It All Started With a Little Bug

Actress Rose McGowan on her unplanned love affair with the Boston Terrier

Best known for playing the character Paige Matthews in the hit series Charmed as well as for her contributions to independant cinemas, particularly as Cherry Darling in the Planet Terror segment of the Tarantino/ Rodriguez juggernaut, Grindhouse, the name Rose McGowan has graced “sexiest people” lists more than once. And while she has been linked romantically to an internationally acclaimed musician, a Hollywood director, and a beefy men’s health magazine editor, she will be the first to admit the love of her life actually had four legs. Her name was Bug. And they met the night Rose’s plan included nothing more than a quick stop at the mall. more

One Woman’s Junk is an Animal Shelter’s Treasure

Brandi Williams on how a pile of old towels led her to a whole new life.

While her credits include appearances on Fox, E!, MSNBC, and KTLA, not to mention her new stint on nationally syndicated show, The Daily Buzz, sightings of this go-getter aren’t relegated to on-air. An avid volunteer at shelters across the US, Williams is a frequent speaker at animal rights events. more

Gorgeous Inside and Out

Supermodel Niki Taylor on her house, husband, and ponytail living

I’m so thankful for the invention of the telephone, I need a new word for this level of gratitude. Being between addresses and currently living out of a suitcase at my in-laws’ until we take possession of our new house, I’ve been wearing what has become something of a uniform for the last month: coffee-stained yoga pants that embody the descriptor “elastic waist” and uncombed hair in an unkempt ponytail. It’s been so long since I’ve put on mascara, the wee wand would likely render me befuddled. So the irony isn’t lost on me that this is the state in which I find myself when I prepare for my talk with supermodel Niki Taylor. If ever there were an instance to fall down on my knees and thank higher beings for the magic of technology, allowing me an over-the-phone-and-therefore-not-visible chat, this would be it. The whole thing is nothing short of a miracle. more

A Voice for Animals

Songstress Leona Lewis on animals, Avatar, and advocacy.

It’s obvious right from the lilting Hello, this is Leona at the other end of the phone line that the only thing diva-like about Leona Lewis is her powerhouse singing voice. The British pop star got her start just four years ago on The X Factor, the UK counterpart to American Idol, when she was famously one of the few to stun the critical Simon Cowell into silence. Since then, she has successfully hopped the pond with her music, being the first British solo artist to top the US Billboard 200 with a debut album. more
