There’s a field of grass I walk through when taking Penny on her daily dog walks. It’s loaded with tiny little daisies and the warm Spring weather has brought them into bloom. The sight of those sparkling white flowers set against the carpet of green grass brings me back to summers before when I’d walk with Penny’s predecessor, my Kaya-girl, a spirited Weimaraner/Pointer cross, who’d romp and play and race with her canine pals on that same long, open stretch of grass. On one beautiful, warm

The recent stretch of summer-like weather in my part of the world has inspired me to get up a little earlier and cycle to work. Rather than talk myself out of it as I sometimes do with arguments such as, “I’ve got to bring the car as I’ll need to quickly get to that after-work appointment”, or “I’ve got too many things to carry so I’ll need the car”, or worse yet, “it takes too long and I can better spend the time working”, I instead talk myself into it with just how much better I’ll feel

If you're like me, you always feel a little guilty when travel plans force you to leave your canine kid behind, so if you know you’re going to be travelling this summer and won’t be bringing your furry best friend along, then you should start planning now. Modern pup parents want their canine charges to be well cared for in their absence so whether you opt for an upscale dog hotel or a more budget-conscious facility there are a number of things you should consider before dropping Fido off in

A few weeks ago, after taking Esther (my daughter’s dog), and Penny (my dog), out for a walk in the woods I noticed that Esther was limping. I had her roll over on her back so I could more closely examine the pads of her feet thinking that perhaps she had picked up a thorn or pebble. There wasn’t anything wrong with her feet, but to my horror I noticed a brightly coloured and angry looking bulls-eye bruise on the inside of her thigh. I thought that perhaps she had gotten pinched or jabbed by

Every year I look forward to the Westminster Kennel Club's dog show held at the "mecca of sports arenas", Madison Square Garden in NYC. This year's event takes place February 11th and 12th; however, for the first time ever, the judging will take place in two different venues. Breed judging, benching and Junior Showmanship preliminary competition will take place during the days at the Piers 92/94 (located at West 55th St and the West Side Hwy - 12 Ave). Group

With so many of us traveling the highways for the holiday season at a time of year when  the weather throws us its worse, I hope that you and your families arrived at your destinations safely. My family got together for Christmas at my mom's place up in the Okanagan (see previous blog). The Coquihalla Highway (and Connector) that we travel on takes us through some majestic

With the Holidays just around the corner, I'm looking forward to spending some time with my family, catching up and reminiscing Christmases past (and undoubtedly eating and drinking more than I ought to). With snowy mountain passes and unpredictable weather to combat on the five-hour drive to get there, considerable forethought and preparation goes into packing up the vehicle, especially as

This month marks the third anniversary of my dog Kaya's passing. A feisty Weimeraner/Pointer cross who lived sixteen long years, she was the inspiration behind Modern Dog magazine and became its muse and mascot.  There's not a day that goes by where I don't think of her, fondly

Here's to you and your dogs! At this special time, there's nothing like getting together with friends and family to enjoy a special meal and celebrate the year's blessings.

Please beware though, guests are often tempted to sneak treats to Poochie who's sitting quietly under the table hopefully awaiting a dropped scrap of food. You of course know that you
