Commuting Canines (and Cats)

Animals hitch a ride on public transportation

By Melissa Barr

News broke recently about the death of Casper, the cat from the UK who would commute across town unaccompanied on city buses. Though Casper’s use of public transport no doubt amazed many commuters, animals using public transportation aren’t as rare as we might assume. In Russia, it happens more than you would expect. Stray dogs board the subway, hop up onto a seat if one is available, ride for a few stops, and then disappear into the crowds. There is even a Russian message board set up for pictures taken of the commuting dogs.
